Black half-leather with gilt spine titling and decoration, with heavy scuffing shelf-wear and edgewear, including frayed edges and significant cracking to the leather at spine; gilt bright, with the spine lettering… still legible. Binding delicate, cracked at rear inner hinge and between some of the issues. Endsheets and fly leaves a little delicate, with the slight wavy stiffness association with ambient moisture. Prior owner's name inked to second fly leaf, before the title page; with some color transfer to the first fly leaf, preceding. Pages edgeworn, with intermittent soil to margins throughout; heavily foxed. Text else unmarked. With contributions from Edgar Allan Poe, James Fenimore Cooper, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and others. Includes the first-ever appearance of Poe's 'The Conquering Worm.'.

Green half-leather with gilt spine titling and decoration; green marbled paper boards; heavy shelf-wear and edgewear inc…luding rubbing, scraping, bumped and frayed spine ends and fore-edge corners, one inch of loss to the leather at spine head. Marbled textblock edges. Hinges cracked; the revealed threads are secure here. The last pages of the April issue, comprising the illustrations between pages 254 and 255, have pulled from the thread binding and are nearly fully split in the gutter, holding only by a small part at bottom margin. All pages present, and no other pages appear to be loosening. Faded, illegible previous owner's name or phrase inked to FFEP. Pages foxed; occasional dampstaining. Interior else clean and unmarked. With contributions from Edgar Allan Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lord Tennyson, James Fenimore Cooper, and others. First with frontispiece engraving in sepia of editor Rufus Wilmot Griswold and original tissue guard, some uneveness to its adherence along gutter; adjacent is light stylized titles with vignette of pastoral engraving. Second features same titles with additional details and several poetic excerpts. Bind fine; hinges intact. Sharp near very good volume approaching 170 years in existence. Presented here is an original 1856 sixteenth edition of this annual selection of American poets and poetry featuring a very early bound printing of "The Raven." "The Raven" is found on page 479 and is accompanied by a woodcut portrait of Poe with a unique and rather thorough biography, along with an amazing fourteen other poems, including "The Bells," "The Conqueror Worm" and "The Haunted Palace." Also, amazingly included, is an early printing of "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement C. Moore with a short biography of him. This sparkling poetic tale would go to be popularly named the "The Night Before Christmas" with innumerable illustrated editions from various artists.
