Contact seller5-star sellerPoor condition. Sold as a group only being six volumes issued within author Samuel G. Goodrich's twenty volume set PARLEY'S CABINET LIBRARY. All six by Boston publisher James E. Hickman whose firm was active from 1844 to 1853 but who was only at the 12 School Street address between 1844 to 1848 (none of the six have dated title…pages but do have copyright dates on title page versos). Hardcovers: approx. H 18cm x L 11.5cm. Contemporary dark brown cloth boards with varying surface losses/abrasions; each volume's spine cloth unfortunately perished leaving underlying paper and/or cloth back-strips exposed. Ownership signatures on front pastedowns; foxing, soiling, and stains. Bindings still fairly firm despite poor exterior cosmetics. Jpegs emailed upon request to clarify condition. Goodrich was an immensely popular author in the mid-nineteenth century with the books comprising his PARLEY'S CABINET LIBRARY being amongst his most successful titles. Boston publisher Bradbury Soden & Co. was first to publish this Parley series but other publishers in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia soon followed. These Hickman imprints are among the scarcest for the series and kept as a group with that consideration. ***** {BOOK #1 in the series} FAMOUS MEN OF MODERN TIMES: BY THE AUTHOR OF PETER PARLEY'S TALES. Seller: David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, U.S.A.David Hallinan, Bookseller
Contact seller5-star sellerPoor condition. i-x, 11-855, [1], 1-48 pages. Hardcover: H 24.5cm x L 15.25cm. Original gilt decorated leather boards with significant peeling losses; front and rear boards only tenuously attached by old tape repairs at hinges; spine's surface leather entirely perished with underlying backstirp exposed lengthwise. All edges once… gilt but now quite dulled from rubbing and flaking losses; dark stains to bottom edge. Endpapers soiled; antiquarian ink ownership inscription on front flyleaf; child's pencil scribbling on some early leaves; light moisture stains mostly at bottom gutter corners of interior leaves along with scattered soiling and light foxing/toning. Text block remains reasonably firm. Sold as is with all faults. Frequently writing under the pseudonym Peter Parley, Samuel Goodrich edited/authored some 170 books, many being school readers-learners, during a bookselling-publishing career that spanned from 1816 to 1859. The book's title page has the Richmond, Virginia 1853 imprint of Morse & Nebhut with concluding statement "Sold only by subscription." whereas the verso has an 1852 copyright statement for [Hartford] Connecticut publisher House & Brown followed by "Stereotyped by George A. Curtis, New England Type and Stereotype Foundry, Boston." The latter makes it likely that the book was actually printed in Massachusetts with the title leaf prepared for the Richmond firm's selling-marketing effort. Whatever the book's actual printing location may be it still qualifies as a Richmond imprint for which it is evidently quite scarce as OCLC does not locate any 1853 copies (OCLC does locate an 1856 Richmond Morse & Nebhut imprint of this title as well as an 1858 Richmond imprint by E. Nebhut & Bros.). As a further testament to the scarcity of Morse & Nebhut collaborations, OCLC only locates one other imprint for the firm - Samuel Goodrich's PARLEY'S PANORAMA issued in 1857. Morse & Nebhut were partners in a printing/publishing firm in Nashville in 1851 but information regarding their Richmond partnership is, other than sparse OCLC results, elusive. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4 pounds (1.81 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 312 pages, 4 unnumbered leaves of plates) : illustrations ; illustrated half-title by Whitney & Jocelyn ; Samuel G. Goodrich was an American bookseller, publisher, and writer well known during his lifetime for his engaging educational works for children. Writing under the pen name Peter Par…ley, Goodrich crafted fictional stories grounded in the science and knowledge of the time. Goodrich's The Balloon Travels of Robert Merry, published in this format in 1856, appeared serially in his Merry's Magazine in the years prior. Goodrich incorporated geography, aeronautics, and general science into a ballooning adventure tale across Europe with intrepid young travelers, whose ages were around those of Goodrich's intended readers."--Smithsonian ; "Largely self-educated, Goodrich became a bookseller and publisher at Hartford and later in Boston. There, beginning in 1828, he published for 15 years an illustrated annual, the Token, to which he was a frequent contributor both in prose and verse. The Token contained some of the earliest work of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry W. Longfellow. Goodrich published Peter Parley's Magazine (1832-44) and then merged it into his Merry's Museum, founded in 1841 and for a time edited by Louisa May Alcott. In 1827 he began, under the name of Peter Parley, his series of books for the young, which embraced geography, biography, history, science, and miscellaneous tales. He was the sole composer of comparatively few of these, but in his Recollections of a Lifetime, 2 vol. (1856), he wrote that he was "the author and editor of about 170 volumes," of which about 7,000,000 copies had been sold, and gave a list both of the works of which he was the author or editor and of the spurious works published under his name. He was widely imitated, especially in England, where seven Peter Parleys held the field. Goodrich was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1836 and of the state Senate in 1837. In 1851-53 he was consul at Paris, where he remained until 1855. ' - Britanica ; 5 plates laid in ; slightly knocked blind stamp tooling ; water stain on front ; FAIR only. Book.
