First Edition. 8vo; handsomely rebound in full calf, triple ruled in gilt with stops on the boards; 5 raised bands double ruled in gilt and a burgundy morocco label with gilt tilting and decoration; there is a burgundy paste-down under turn-ins elaborately decorated in gilt; 98 pages with 6 pages of advertisements in the rear; with original burgundy cloth boards and spine with gilt decoration and titling bound in. There is a light scrape to the upper board and some cracks to the gutter of both boards as well as a few spots with trivial surface loss.~~With 8 beautifully hand colored illustrations and addition black and white illustrations from a time when pictures in children's books were often frightening. ~~Gift inscription from George H Carmichael to his little brother Thomas Gibson Carmichael on the first blank leaf, March 1892. Sir Thomas was a prominent Scottish politician and colonial administrator. During his political career he was the Governor of Victoria, Madras, and Bengal. Sir Thomas was an amateur entomologist and founder of the Scottish Beekeepers Association. A damselfly species, Drepanoscicta carmichaeli was named after him by biologist Frank Fortescue Laidlaw in 1915. A fitting gift for someone who was an avid naturalist. ~. Near Fine binding.

Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A quintessential work by the absurdist illustrator Ernest Griset, and a copy heightened by hand-coloring. 4to. [6], 151, [5] pp. With 100 or so hand-colored illustrations, including frontis. Note that most copies of this lack the coloring of the images. Clean and tight within, with newer endpapers. Wear to spine tips and along the edges, with cloth rubbed in corners. Spine tear repaired, with trace of it still visible. Soil marks on the boards. The centerpiece of a gilt diaper and raised figures may have the faintest of fading but nonetheless remains bright and and eye pop. Decorated, and Blindstamped, Cloth.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of mounting on the blank reverse. The letter reads: 'I shall be happy to execute your orders, and shall be obliged if you kindly forward me the blocks and Copy, with your directions upon what style you wish these drawings to be done: to my address as above.'.

Unbound. Condition: Very Good. Four wood-engraved color prints, measuring approximately: 7" x 4", 6¼" x 3½", 6½" x 7½", and 7" x 7". Pasted at the corners two-up on two sheets of thick wove paper, else very good with scattered light staining to the edges. Two prints match the illustrations from *Legends of Savage Life* by James Greenwood, first published in London by J.C. Hotten in 1867. They were designed and drawn directly on wood blocks by the French-born English illustrator Ernest Griset, and engraved by H.N. Woods. A *Harper's Magazine* review of the American edition described them as "savage enough to satisfy the most critical - caricatures with abundant justification in the legends for their burlesque; full of life, and of a certain grim and grotesque humor, without being any where vulgar, debasing, or bloody." Griset was celebrated for his illustrations of animals, birds and insects, many of which can found at the British Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Full Calf. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. With handwritten letter from Griset to Edward Whymper, the renowned mountaineer, dated November 22, 1881 mounted onto preliminary leaf. Whymper, besides being the first to scale the Matterhorn, was a wood engraver and illustrator. In this letter Griset thanks Whymper for a cheque and speaks of a desire to make the acquaintance of Whymper soon afterward. As to the book: 4to. [6],151, [5] pp. With publisher's cloth front cover and spine bound in. The hundred Griset drawings are all hand-colored in this copy. The full calf binding has considerable wear, chips and scuffing, around the edges and joints. Rebacked, with original spine labels laid on. Foxing in prelim pages but overall clean and tight.
