Add to basketCondition: Very Good. English Elzevir. The 18mo English Elzevir edition published in London by several third-generation bookmen (Andrew Millar, Jacob Tonson the Younger and Richard Tonson, Henry Linton (son of publisher Barnaby Bernard Lintot), and Charles Bathurst). This ten-volume edition is the smaller, more compact, version…of the text produced by Pope's literary executor and is in Very Good condition in its original mottled calf binding. Front pastedown of eight volumes have bookplates of Fratelli Salimbeni (with shelving number) and of "G.P.C." (with woodcut image of Pegasus and motto "Nec adversa retorquent") attractively affixed on the front pastedown. William Warburton (1698-1799), literary critic, author, and churchman wrote articles in defense of Pope from religious unorthodoxy. His apologies would result in a close friendship with Pope and he would be bequeathed the copyright to all of Pope's works after his death in 1744. Warburton subsequently published Pope's complete works in 1751. Initially the volumes were published as Octavo. A later edition would be produced in 12mo as nine volumes. This edition features the 24 engraved plates by Charles I. Grignion and is complete as follows: Volume I Containing his Juvenile Poems: 224 pages.
