It featured narrow-gauge beginnings, a shift to standard gauge, a long lease to the Southern Railway (1899?1949), independent operation, bankruptcy in 1960, and eventual absorption by the Norfolk & Western (later reorganized as the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Railway).
