Zine. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. [ZINES]. Dara Greenwald. "Cuba: Educational Tourist." Chicago: Self-Published, 2004. First edition. English language. Xeroxed stapled zine with paper wrappers. A well-written travelogue of an American art student visiting Cuba as an educational tourist, with black-and-white illustr…ations. 8 1/2 x 7 inches. 3 oz. 42 pp. Shelf-wear on wrappers. Sticker residue and ink correction on back wrapper. Interior clean. Very Good Plus. No ISBN. No ASIN. OCLC: 57930889. "On a trip to Cuba with her Chicago art school, Dara Greenwald keeps a tour diary of what she sees, enjoys, and questions on the trip. She writes about political refugee Assata Shakur, artist Choco, and Afro-Cuban racism as well as questioning sexism in the country. The zine includes pieces on the history of Cuba, but is mostly about the 21st century, the hypocritical tourist business, and the commodification of revolution. Dara traveled to Cuba and left us this document of her trip and the history, radical analysis, perspective, and relations of the US that she learned about. She talks about the revolution still leaving her to be harrassed on the street and how the left is split on their view of Cuba, how US students traveling there would never have a true understanding or perspective of what is really going on, the lack of homelessness there, Cuba's history of being primarily a country of slaves, the US imposing a democracy for everyone but slaves, women, and people who don't own enough property, and thoughts on public space and art. This is truly an involved, in-depth document and gave me much greater understanding of the controversy involved with the left over Cuba as well as what is going on there historically and presently.".
