Add to basketFine Binding. Condition: As New. Limited Edition. This sumptuous Folio Society edition is limited to only 980 copies, this being #513. This large format edition consists of two volumes and an envelope containing four prints, all contained within a solander box measuring 16½'' x 13''. In mint condition and preserved in the origin…al FS packaging, only opened for inspection and photography purposes. Also included is an envelope containing the original FS brochure, invoice etc. 'The Herefordshire Pomona' is the most comprehensive study ever published of the apples and pears grown in Britain, with over 430 different varieties beautifully illustrated and discussed. This stunning edition, published by Folio in 2014, is the first produced since the exceedingly rare original printing from the late 1880s which was bound with text and illustrations together; for this edition, the two have been divided into separate volumes, enabling plates and commentary to be viewed side by side. In addition, Folio commissioned two introductory essays by leading experts, Michael Twyman and Jim Arbury. The plates volume is quarter-bound in dark green Indian goatskin with green canvas sides blocked in gold, and with a gilded top edge. It is printed on a heavy cream matt paper which maintains maximum fidelity to the original book and shows the lustrous illustrations on the 77 plates to full advantage. Each copy is numbered by hand to the limitation page. Illustrator Neil Packer has elegantly redrawn five apples to adorn the plates volume, and a beautiful pear for the text volume which is bound in gold-blocked green canvas. The text has been elegantly reset in Bulmer - fittingly as the Reverend C. H. Bulmer was one of the contributors and cider is much referred to throughout. Each entry is illustrated with a detailed monochrome wood engraving showing the profile and internal form of a cut section of the fruit. Both volumes, along with four prints for framing, are presented in a green canvas-bound solander box, blocked in gold with a design inspired by the original edition, and with a leather titling label on the spine. Printed and bound in Italy. HEAVY/OVERSIZE. Extra postage will be requested. FedEx to USA £150. ORDERS professionally packed, tracked and insured. U.S. BUYERS: Books remain exempt from import duty under U.S. law. I provide accurate customs forms to protect buyers from unnecessary charges and to minimise delays. Ellis, Alice; Bull, Edith; Packer, Neil (illustrator).
