Original Hardcover / Green publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and ornament. Excellent condition. With a beautiful inscription in ink by John George MacCarthy on the halftitle: "Presented to Nicholas Murphy Esq. with the writers best wishes and regards - January 7, 1876". Includes: Henry Grattan's Early Life - 1746 to 1775 / Henry Grattan's Struggle for Commercial Freedom and National Independence [1775 to 1782] / Henry Grattan's Struggle for Catholic Emancipation and Parliamentary Reform [1782 to 1797] / Henry Grattan's Struggle against the Union [1800] / Henry Grattan's Last Years and Death [1800 to 1820]. The author mentions in the front of the book: "The following pages have been published at the suggestion of some members of the Grattan Monument Committee, in the hpe of promoting and popularizing knowledge of the subject - River View, Cork, January 1, 1876" John George MacCarthy (18291892) was an Irish Home Rule League politician. Brown paper-covered boards with titling on paper labels on the spine. Volume One has a frontis engraving, then xx, 465 pages. Appendic, Erratum, and a two-page catalog in the rear. Light toning, but textblock remains bright and clear. Mild bumping; chips to the head, foot, and the paper label. Volume Two is xvi, 455 pages; with Appendix. Light tanning as in Volume One; mild bumps and a few light chips to the spine. Despite these small faults, a solid and attractive set. In archival plastic protectors. First Edition. Hard Cover.
