Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Near Fine. This two volume set is bound in matching navy blue publisher's cloth. Covers are plain with gilt lettering on each spine. Profusely illustrated with facsimile art by William Blake, the 537 watercolour drawings and 43 engravings reproduced in these volumes constitute Blake's largest pict…orial work. They comprise a page-for-page illustration of all nine Nights of the once famous Night Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality by Edward Young (1683-1765). Transformed by Blake's imagination they shine as an illuminated serial fresco of irony, comedy, and prophecy. This publication in book form, with its high proportion of full-colour plates, is a necessary response to the ever-increasing interest in William Blake and to the exacting inclusiveness of a critical scholarship which demands easy access and frequent reference to the artist's entire work. Volume I and II, containing the Introduction and Plates, will be followed by Volumes III and IV, the Commentary. (From the dust jacket; Volumes III and IV are NOT included within this listing.) Matching illustrated dust jackets in color against an off white background; black lettering on the cover and spine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE ADDRESS AND PORTRAIT. In the years 1863 and 1864 Speke published, respectively, JOURNAL OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE and, WHAT LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE NILE. Despite the confusing titles, the "Journal" actually covers his second expedition, with James Grant, while "What Led To" narrates his first journey in the company of Burton. After an expedition into eastern Africa in the company of Sir Richard Burton, Speke returned to England to announce his hypothesis that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. However, his fellow geographers, including Burton, were skeptical of this claim. Under the sponsorship of Sir Roderick Murchison, President of the Royal Geographical Society, Speke went back to Africa and Lake Victoria Nyanza, and when he returned home he claimed that this time he had found conclusive evidence that the lake was indeed the source of the great river. This work is an account of that expedition. It details his day-by-day adventures in his search for the source of the Nile, including myriad accounts of experiences such as his enjoyment of courtly life in the native palace in Uganda and, of course, expeditions of big game hunting. But he never lost sight of "the problem [he] went to solve," and returned with what he claimed was conclusive proof that the Nile issued from Lake Victoria Nyanza. For his work, he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographic Society.
