The Pottery of South Wales - an illustrated guide Numbered copy 46 of print run of 250. Hardback with jacket - as new. Wallace James Grant-Davidson, FSA, FRSA, was at the time of his death in 1999 a noted Swansea personality who had gained an international reputation as an expert in ceramics. This is a book of three parts- a long time in the making. The first and fundamental part was Grant-Davidson's completion of the script, done in the main in 1979. After his death in 1999 his widow Margaret Grant-Davidson sought guidance from Oliver Fairclough of the National Museum of Wales and Brian Simpson ex-president of the Royal Institution of South Wales (now Swansea Museum). Both supported the idea that the book should be published with as few amendments as possible. t took Oliver Fairclough over 3 years to assemble a composite text from the two manuscripts Grant Davidson had left; one containing later corrections by Grant and also by Donald Towner. The book has worn remarkably well during its quarter of a century in Grant Grant Davidson's study, but the reader is referred to several publications that Grant did not have available to him at the time. The original research by Grant on Potters and related employments has been greatly expanded by Robert Leonard and now numbers some 266 entries taken from St. Mary's and St. John's church registers. This list contains some significant and surprising entries. The illustrations of items themselves are from numerous sources including Grant Davidson's own collection and the R.J. Maddock collection. The illustrated catalogue of wares runs from page 125 to page 415 with the informative descriptions that include a description of the piece along with details of any mark, size, source of illustration and very often further notes referring to similar examples recorded elsewhere or providing other information on the piece or its maker. Then follows further illustrations taken from Grant's slide collection of excavations and buildings at the Nantgarw site and the numerous appendices. As this was only published with an edition of 300 copies with no re-prints its a book in demand. Its now become a standard work on the various South Wales potteries.…
