A personal account of the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the Afghan campaigns from the perspective of a soldier. It provides an insight into the realities of war, illustrating the sacrifices made by soldiers and the costs of these conflicts in both blood and treasure. The author reflects on his early life and enlistment into the Royal Fusiliers amidst the excitement of impending war. He provides vivid recollections of his voyage, the camaraderie amongst the soldiers, and the harsh conditions of military life. Also included are sketches from the life of Major General Sir Henry Havelock who was particularly associated with India and the recapture of Cawnpore during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and Captain Hedley Vicars, a British Army officer and evangelical, killed in action during the Crimea.
