About the book >.>.> A consistency of sensibility runs throughout Alan Gouk's work, stretching over the decades in which he has immersed himself so physically and emotionally in painting. They are for me a bolt of energising electricity in which I feel re-charged, an antidote to the literalness of the world. The physicality of the paintings is so exciting, creating direct connections to our physical bodies and the appeal of the cerebral is completely engaging. Alan has kindly provided us with an explanation of some of the titles of his paintings, which for me is a sort of liberation. Nothing suggested in the titles are present in the compositions. another piece of the jigsaw that is part of Alan's process. at the end of the day it's the intensity of the paint itself, the promiscuity of its visual language that gives us the opportunity to develop and explore an aesthetic vocabulary speaking directly from the gut and the mind, implanting as it does, an exciting experience of being subsumed in the sheer scale of the work. Embracing us wit.
