Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Folio (285 x 228 mm). Single vellum leaf. Double column, 22 lines in erkat'agir ("iron script"), capitals in majuscules. A substantial vellum leaf from an early Armenian Gospel book, written in the formal erkat'agir hand characteristic of the earliest biblical manuscripts. - Contains Matthew 22:4, the parable of the wedding banquet, with contemporary marginal additions and corrections that attest to early liturgical or scholarly use. The reverse preserves traces of a large red-and-blue floral cartouche in the outer margin, a decorative feature typical of early Armenian Gospel codices. The generous format and heavy Romanesque parchment point to a sizeable and venerable Gospel volume, produced when Armenian biblical books were revered as relic-like objects and sometimes borne into battle. - Early Armenian Bibles before the twelfth century are scarce; leaves in erkat'agir of this date are correspondingly uncommon and valued for textual and palaeographical study. - Some stains, especially to upper and lower corners; reverse scuffed with areas hard to read; otherwise a presentable leaf on strong, good-quality parchment.
