The primary object of FINITE GROUPS is to present a systematic development of the various methods, new and old, which play a central role in all this work and to show how these techniques are applied to the solutions of specific classification problems. This is the only book which discusses in any detail the recent major papers of Feit-Thompson on groups of odd order, of Gorenstein-Walter on groups with dihedral Sylow 2-subgroups and of Suzuki on groups of even order in which the centralizer of every nonidentity element is nilpotent. The student is thus prepared for the bulk of current literature in the field and for his own advanced research. The prerequisite for FINITE GROUPS is a standard first-year graduate algebra course. Unusual in its continuity, FINITE GROUPS stresses the interrelatedness of the whole field. The book is divided into three parts: Part I. Methods; Part II, Applications; and Part III, General Classification Problems. The student learns both techniques and their uses. Part I includes a detailed treatment of representations of finite groups, ordinary character theory, groups of prime power order, solvable and p-solvable groups, transfer and fusion, basic properties of groups of even order as well as the more recent theory of p-stable and p-constrained groups. Each topic covers at least some material currently to be found only in the literature. These techniques are applied in Part II to give complete analyses of significant special cases of each of the three above-mentioned papers as well as special cases of two other important classification problems: groups with generalized quaternion Sylow 2-subgroups and doubly transitive permutation groups in which only the identity fixes three letters. In addition, there is a full discussion of the solvability of groups possessing fixed-point-free automorphism groups of various types and a complete proof of the Hall-Higman theorem on p-solvable linear groups. Part III is an exposition of all the major classification problems concerning the finite simple groups that have been solved up to the present time, including Thompson's fundamental classification of nonsolvable groups whose nonidentity solvable subgroups have solvable normalizers, with reasonably detailed outlines of their proofs. This discussion is intended to show how the methods developed in the book, together with the particular problems treated in Part II, enter into the long and difficult proofs of these general theorems.
