Considered one of Goodwin's most substantial theological writings. It illustrates the growing divide during the English Civil War period between strict Calvinists and those, like Goodwin, who emphasized human responsibility and a broader understanding of grace. The book later influenced discussions among Arminians, Methodists, and other Protestant thinkers; John Wesley drew upon Goodwin's writings on justification in the eighteenth century.
