He was an instructor in mathematics at Cornell University from 1940 to 1942. With the advent of the war, Golomb assisted the Navy as chief of analysis at the Franklin Institute from 1943 to 1945. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his efforts and became a U.S. citizen in 1945. In 1942, Golomb had joined the faculty at Purdue University, becoming full professor.
