Hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. An unparalleled literary mix tape that brings together the subversive works of Henry Miller, Miles Davis, Jack Kerouac, and many others Who were the original hipsters? In this dazzling collecti…on, Glenn O'Brien provides a kaleidoscopic guided tour through the margins and subterranean tribes of mid-twentieth century America--the worlds of jazz, of disaffected postwar youth, of those alienated by racial and sexual exclusion, of outlaws and drug users creating their own dissident networks. Whether labeled as Bop or Beat or Punk, these outsider voices ignored or suppressed by the mainstream would merge and recombine in unpredictable ways, and change American culture forever. To read The Cool School is to experience the energies of that vortex. Drawing on memoirs, poems, novels, comedy routines, letters, essays, and song lyrics, O'Brien's collection brings together Henry Miller, Miles Davis, Jack Kerouac, Diane di Prima, Lenny Bruce, William S. Burroughs, Bob Dylan, Annie Ross, Norman Mailer, Terry Southern, Andy Warhol, Lester Bangs, and dozens of others, including such legendary figures as Beat avatar Neal Cassady, jazz memoirist Babs Gonzales, inspired comic improviser Lord Buckley, no-holds-barred essayist Seymour Krim, and underground filmmaker Jack Smith. His one-of-a-kind anthology recreates an unforgettable era in all its hallucinatory splendor: transgressive, raucous, unruly, harrowing, and often subversively hilarious.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. The classic Madonna SEX Book. This is the scarce JAPANESE edition, with remarkably clearer images than the American edition (see below for details). Bilingual text in English & Japanese. Photographed by Steven Meisel. Art directed by Fabien Baron. Edited by Glenn O'Brien. Produced…by Callaway. Published by Dohosha, Tokyo. There were American, French & Japanese editions, all published in 1992. Numerous colour and b&w photographs throughout. Contains nudity. As well as Madonna, the book features Isabella Rossellini, Naomi Campbell, Vanilla Ice, and several others. Includes bound-in COMIC BOOK at rear, as issued. The 8-page erotic comic book is titled Dita in The Chelsea Girl. NO CD. This copy lacks the CD. Also lacks the silver mylar bag. Though almost identical (with the same pagination & exact same layout), the differences between the more-common US edition & this scarce Japanese edition are as follows: FIRST & FOREMOST the Japanese edition is printed on fine GLOSSY paper, rendering a LOT more depth of CLARITY (the US edition is printed on flat paper, & comparing the two side-by-side - as we have copies of both - the Japanese edition is strikingly CLEARER throughout); the Japanese edition has 4 pages with intimate genitalia blackened out in the printing process (of MEN's genitals only); the Japanese edition contains BOTH Japanese & English text (6 internal pages with Japanese superimposed over the English text, so both are readable, plus the comic book, introductory text, & acknowledgements at rear are all in Japanese only); the Japanese edition contains an extra 8 pages at rear (with the translations from English to Japanese of all the additional text pages within the book that aren't actually translated on the particular superimposed page, with small thumbnail images of each of the pages); & finally the Japanese edition has no serial number stamped to rear cover. Printed in Japan. Spiral-bound in original silver steel covers with minimal stamped design (merely the word "Sex" to front cover & die-cut symbol to rear). A very nice clean tight solid steel-bound copy. Unpaginated (132pp + 8pp comic book). The uncommon Japanese edition. Large heavy volume, extra shipping may be required. RARE.
