The successful novel of 1928 is a clear, unsentimental generational book about the time of the First World War that has remarkably remained vivid. Ernst grows up in a small town in southern Germany during the late Kaiserreich, where his world initia…lly seems intact. However, society is marked by fundamental conflicts: antisemitism, political struggles between left and right, and between the poor and the rich. The war temporarily bridges these divides, but as it drags on, the questionable nature of patriotism and the fragility of the existing order become evident. Glaeser intertwines external events with the inner life of his protagonist, who must fight for sexual experiences and his own opinions against the prudish world of his fathers and their hollow moralism. When the novel is published in 1928, it resonates with the zeitgeist and encapsulates the trauma of a generation that experienced disillusionment behind the front lines of the First World War. The book receives high praise from contemporary critics and becomes an international sensation. Erich Maria Remarque commends its sharp perspective and vividness, noting its literary value and historical significance.

No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Inner hinges are perfect. Bound in the original brown-stamped, biege buckram cloth. Mellown D8 (in Bibl…iography of the Writings of Edwin Muir). The coming-of-age novel CLASS OF 1902 by Ernst Glaeser (1902-1963) was originally published in Germany as JAHRGANG 1902. In 1938, this and most of Glaeser's other works were blacklisted by the Nazis. Just like the author, the book's narrator was born in 1902, too young to fight in World War I. The book attracted Nazi censure because it paints an unflattering picture of daily life in Germany during the war years. The Nazis also objected to the book's favorable references to liberal causes; for making fun of anti-Semites; and for its tolerant view of sexual relationships between immigrant workers and German women. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good condition./No Dust Jacket. 8vo. 397pp. .
