GIOVANNI da CAPESTRANO ((Capestrano 1386 - Ilok, Croazia 1456) figlio di un barone tedesco e di una dama abruzzese; giurista e governatore di Perugia, convertito ottenne la nullità del matrimonio, francescano dei Frati Minori Osservanti, canonizzato nel 1690, inquisitore degli Ebrei, evangelizzatore in tutta l'Europa settentrionale ed orientale, in particolare in Ungheria orientale cioè in Transilvania, inviato direttamente dal papa come suo legato in paesi tedescofoni come l'Austria, la Baviera e la Polonia, dove si dimostrò estremamente zelante nei suoi tentativi di convertire eretici (in particolare fraticelli e hussiti), ebrei e ortodossi greco orientali. Opera in cui Giovanni Tecca da Capistrano, frate minore riformato, ex Generale dei Francescani, si dichiara innocente dopo la condanna a tre anni di carcere da parte del Sacro Tribunale del S. Uffizio. La Badessa del Convento diÂMontecastrilliÂviveva in fama di santita' ma correvano alcune voci tendenziose che mettevano in dubbio la verita' del fatto. Fu ordinato a GiovanniÂTeccaÂda Capestrano di indagare ed accertarsi della verita'. Egli difese la badessa dalle accuse che le erano state mosse, ma il Sant'Uffizio in seguito scopri' l'inganno da parte della religiosa condannandola.ÂTecca, appena seppe delle decisioni del Sacro Tribunale, ritiro' la precedente difesa, ma cio' non valse ad essere, a sua volta, condannato a tre anni e tre mesi di carcere. Scontata la pena, nel 1835, venne rimesso in liberta' con l'obbligo di tenersi lontano dalla Corte pontificia. Scelse, come rifugio, il Convento di S. Paolo a Bologna e qui scrisse quest'opera a propria difesa. L'opera fu poi messa all'Indice. ITA.
