hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Jacket has several closed tears, green cloth boards have minor wear, binding sound, front endpage has an embossing, internally clean. THIS book discusses the magnificent porphyry tombs in the Cathedrals of Palermo and Monreale in which rest the remains of King Roger II of Sicily, the German Emperors Frederick II and Henry VI, and other members of the Norman and Hohenstaufen dynasties. Well known to tourists who visit the Sicilian capital, these monuments have not until now been the subject of a thorough scholarly study. Their date, their attribution to specific rulers, the models which inspired their disign?all are problems which, as was remarked some years ago by the late Professor U. Monneret de Villard, "not only have never been solved, but have not even been approached with modern scientific methods." In this work Professor Deer demonstrates, through a sys-tematic analysis of both literary and art historical evidence, that the entire series of tombs was executed for rulers of the Norman dynasty and reflects a veritable porphyry "cult" first promoted by the great Roger II. Well aware of the significance which por-phyry had had as an "imperial" stone in both ancient Rome and Byzantium, the Norman rulers modelled their tombs on Roman prototypes and thus became the inaugurators of a classical revival in the art of Southern Italy more widely known from its later sequel in the age of Frederick II. The author analyzes the political motivation of this porphyry "cult," particularly in the light of Roger II's relation Nvith Byzantium and the papacy, and thereby throws new light on the period of Norman rule in Sicily. Aside from the tombs in Pa-lermo, he discusses a number of other porphyry objects, including several in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection, which he attributes to the same period. This book, therefore, is equally important for the historian and the art historian. The author, who is Professor of History at the University of Berne, offers here a major contribution to the study of medieval political history and in particular of medieval kingship through its symbolic and material manisfetations, a relatively new field of investigation and one in which he is recoznized as a leading authority.

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill.
