Dicho de otro modo, se sublevó a mandíbula batiente. En este libro se conjuga el relato del propio héroe con los testimonios de quienes lo trataron a lo largo del tiempo desde su infancia en Carolina del Sur hasta sus años de venerable pontificado, pasando, naturalmente, por el estruendo del bebop, el jolgorio de las big bands y las infusiones con ritmos afrocubanos. Al Fraser entrevista a muchos colegas de Gillespie, entre ellos a Miles Davis, Billy Eckstine, Cab Calloway, Mary Lou Williams o Kenny Clarke.
