Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. "An Introduction to the World's Greatest" ain't books but rather a boxed set of five, 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz LP records, World's Greatest Music Series WGM(S)-2A, "from the catalogue of Roulette Records Birdland Series," the vinyl very-good-plus (no real problems, but these records have been played), four of the five discs marked "Stereo," the box intact and "very good" with some edge rub and what's probably a sticker pull to bottom of rear panel. On the bright side, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis offer "Crazeology" and "Bird Feathers"; Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker bring us "School Days" and "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac"; Art Tatum offers "Dark Eyes"; the Stan Getz Quartet brings us "Hershey Bar"; we find Sonny Stitt with "Spinning" and "Hitsburg." Maynard Ferguson, Sarah Vaughan ("Stormy Weather") and Joe Williams each get a full disc to themselves, set of five now reduced from $12. For Maynard Ferguson fans we'll throw in OUR SECOND BOXED SET of two Roulette LPs, "The Maynard Ferguson Years," K-101, appear to be mono, very-good-plus vinyl in a "good" original 1965 box, including "Hip Twist," "Stella By Starlight," "Mambo La Mans" (sic), "The Party's Over," etc. -- that second boxed set being about a $4 value, the pair of boxed sets now reduced from $14.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Long Playing Microgroove" vinyl "compilation" record, Capitol H-325, near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket. In 1952 "jazz" was in transition out of the confines of the tightly scored "big bands," of course. This "sampler" offers the single cut Budo (Bud Powell-Miles Davis) by Miles Davis and his Orchestra (including Lee Konitz and Gerry Mulligan), the single cut "Oo-La-La" (Gillespie-Williams-Acea) by Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra (including John Coltrane and Paul Gonsalves), "Overtime" (Pete Rugolo) performed by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra, Neal Hefti's "Opus 96" performed by Bill Harris and his Orchestra (gosh, what a lot of "orchestras"!) and some cuts by Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. "The music may sound dissonant to the casual listener on first hearing," warn the Capitol liner notes, "but additional plays reveal a wealth of modern invention, never before heard on record. This is tomorrow's music today!" Well, mostly. Drummer Shelly Manne manages to show up on three cuts, Max Roach on two. Catalogs $60; here reduced from $25.

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm mono vinyl jazz album, copyright 1961 but generally listed as a 1963 release, Reprise R-6072 with white labels "Promotional Not For Sale," near-mint vinyl in a near-mint cardboard jacket. (In fact, if you've ever wondered, this is an empty bluff. Once this record was mailed out -- they were virtually always unsolicited -- to a radio station, it became the property of said radio station to dispose of as it pleased (other than REPRODUCING new copies) In January of 2011, NPR reports, "The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld a lower court's decision that the sale of so-called promo records -- usually advance copies of new releases sent to music critics and radio stations by record labels -- does NOT violate copyright laws.") With a shifting assembly of sidemen available during his 1952 trip to France (Don Byas tenor sax; Wade Legge piano, drummer Bill Clark of Lena Horne's rhythm section, etc.) John Birks Gillespie offers "Sweet Lorraine," "Dizzy's Blues," "I Cover the Waterfront," "Mon Homme," "Fais Gaffe!", "She's Funny That Way," a pseudo-Dixieland "'S Wonderful," etc. This jazz LP now reduced from $35.
