Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the discrepancy between archaeological evidence of widespread domestication of certain coyote species throughout the Americas, and the complete absence of coyotes from archaeological evidence of domesticated animals brought to North America from Eurasia. To resolve the discrepancy, the author approaches the problem from three directions: investigating the concept of a species as a polythetic set of breeding populations; analyzing the skull structure of the coyote and its relatives, both extant and extinct, to determine the degree to which interbreeding has occurred and when; and examining the morphological similarities and differences of the wild, semi-domesticated, and domesticated forms of the coyote. The author concludes that coyotes were never truly domesticated but rather hung on the fringes of human communities, taking advantage of the food and resources such proximity offered, and that this behavior still persists in some modern populations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
