Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Very Good, Gently read if at all. Clean and Unmarked. Usual Easton Press quality features: High quality genuine leather; 22kt gold inlaid design on both back and front covers, spine with four raised bands and accented in 22kt gold -- gilt page edges; archival acid-neutral paper; Smyth-sewn; and s…ewn in satin ribbon book mark. . . . . . This volume brings together what are probably the two most atypical Greek comedies by Aristophanes. *The Birds* is one play where for once Aristophanes does not seem to be attacking some specific abuse in Athens, while "The Frogs" is actually the first "serious" attempt at dramatic criticism. This is not to suggest that *The Birds* (*Ornithes*) is nothing more than escapist entertainment. Certainly there are those who see it as a political satire about the imperialistic dreams that resulted in the disastrous invasion of Sicily (which happened the year before his play was produced in 414 B.C.). Then again, this could just be Aristophanes bemoaning the decline of Athens. -- Lawrance Bernabo.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Aristophanes. Lysistrata. A new version by Gilbert Seldes with an introduction by Mr. Seldes and illustrations by Pablo Picasso. New York: The Heritage Press, 1962. Quarto (11.25 × 8.5 in). Red cloth spine over tan marbled boards with line drawings by Picasso in red; gilt spine t…itles; black slipcase. A fine Heritage Press reissue of the famed Limited Editions Club 1934 Lysistrata, uniting Aristophanes- timeless antiwar comedy with Pablo Picasso's celebrated neoclassical line drawings. Gilbert Seldes' translation and preface frame the Athenian dramatist's satire on gender and power with modern clarity and humor. Picasso's 1933 illustrations, executed in sanguine line, transform the bawdy and lyrical tone of the play into a suite of restrained yet sensuous classical images bridging antiquity and modernism. Condition: Near Fine in Very Good slipcase. Text and plates crisp and unmarked. Boards bright and clean with sharp gilt lettering and vivid red backstrip. Binding tight. Small bookplate ('Ex Libris Nancy Ann Helfer') to front pastedown. Slipcase sturdy with light edge rubbing and shelfwear. A particularly well-preserved example of this iconic Picasso-Heritage Press collaboration. Copyright 1934 by The Limited Editions Club; copyright renewed 1962 by The George Macy Companies, Inc.; play copyright 1930 by Gilbert Seldes. First Heritage Press edition (1962), reproducing the 1934 Limited Editions Club issue. No subsequent printings noted. Printed in red and black on fine cream laid stock; bound by The Heritage Bindery in full cloth with printed paper sides. Illustrated throughout with Picasso's line drawings reproduced from the original copperplates. This Heritage Press edition has been printed in a format faithful to the 1934 Limited Editions Club original. The text is set in Monotype Garamond and printed in two colors on a smooth, opaque stock selected for clarity of both letterpress and line illustration. The binding was designed under the supervision of The George Macy Companies. The illustrations by Pablo Picasso were reproduced from the original copperplate etchings under license from the Limited Editions Club. The book was manufactured and bound in the United States. Pablo Picasso (illustrator).
