"Wohl aber sind sämmtliche Theorieen Liebig's, die Ansichten aller unserer Empiriker, bloße Fictionen des Verstandes, nichts als leere Hirngespinnste. Ja, es halten sich diese rein - empirischen Naturforscher in den meisten Fällen nicht einmal an die Erfahrung, obgleich sie es, was eine wahre Frechheit ist, behaupten. Sind z. B. alle ihre Theorieen über die Imponderabilien, über Atome, Molecüle u. s. w., in der Erfahrung begründet? Alle die s. g. gewichtlosen Stoffe (welcher Widerspruch!), die Atome u. dergl., liegen ja gänzlich außerhalb des Bereiches der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung; es sind alles dies nichts als in sich haltlose Hypothesen! Und ersiehet man nicht, daß bei der gewöhnlichen Aufstellung von Theorieen über chemische Metamorphosen, wie in der vorliegenden Schrift selbst näher bewiesen ist, gar nicht auf bekannte Thatsachen reflectirt wird? Wird man aber auf einem solchen Wege zu richtigen Resultaten gelangen? Dennoch blicken die sogenannten Empiriker mit wahrer Verachtung auf die Theorieen der philosophischen Naturforscher herab. Worin aber ist dieses anders begründet, als theils in dem Nichtverstehen des Speculativen, theils in dem Festgebanntsein in den alten Formen! Aber das Alte kann in gegenwärtiger Zeit, wo der Geist die legte Versöhnung seiner mit sich selbst und aller Wirklichkeit feiert, nicht länger bestehen. "So sehen wir denn jetzt" - sagt Kohlrausch (Physiologie und Chemie in ihrer gegenseitigen Stellung, beleuchtet durch eine Kritik von Liebig's Thierchemie. S. 3), , einer Zeit entgegen, oder befinden uns vielmehr schon mitten darin, welche für die Entwickelung der physiologischen Wissenschaft (ja für die Wissenschaft überhaupt!) von der größten Bedeutung werden kann. Aber es wird hierbei gehen, wie bei allen Entwickelungen und Fortschritten; der wahre und richtige Kern wird eine Zeit lang verhüllt bleiben in dem Streite der Meinungen und, wie leider die Erfahrung lehrt, der Leidenschaften. Die Chemie wird ihren Ansichten beim Aufbau einer physiologischen Grundtheorie eine weitere Ausdehnung geben, als die bisher vermittelten Thatsachen gestatten; die Physiologie wird vorgefaßte Ansichten und selbft Irrthümer noch lange vertheidigen. Das Resultat des Kampfes, der bisher fast nur von der offensiven Partei geführt wird, muß ein Fortschritt sein, wenn er auch nur in der Vernichtung der unhaltbaren physiologischen Ansichten bestände."
