Condition: Very Good. Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Twenty-six New Yorker cartoonists take on aging, retirement, death and the Great Beyond. George Booth, Edward Koren, Marisa Acocella Marchetto (creator of Cancer Vixen) and Gahan Wilson are among those confronting the Reaper. Some cartoons in the book have previously appeared in the New Yorker, but most are originals. Contributors range in age from their 30s to the 90-year-old Frank Modell. Various cartoons deal with the shock of baby boomers as their old age looms: Roz Chast depicts the body with a mind of its own, aging despite its owner's wishes; J.B. Handelsman draws an executive telling an older worker that the company encourages certain employees to die. But many of the cartoons celebrate the continuing vitality of seniors, such as Lee Lorenz's female astronaut who will be the first Gray Panther to walk on the moon. The hooded Grim Reaper is a continuing presence, but many cartoons are set in heaven or hell. In the back of the book, most of the contributors say who they would like to meet in the Great Beyond. Richard Jay Schaap (September 27, 1934 - December 21, 2001) was an American sportswriter, broadcaster, and author. Schaap began work as assistant sports editor of Newsweek. He became editor of SPORT magazine in 1973. After spending the 1970s with NBC as an NBC Nightly News and Today Show correspondent, he moved to ABC World News Tonight and 20/20 at ABC in the 1980s. He earned five Emmy Awards, for profiles of Sid Caesar and Tom Waddell, two for reporting, and for writing. In 1988 he began hosting The Sports Reporters on ESPN cable television. He also hosted Schaap One on One on ESPN Classic and a syndicated ESPN Radio program called The Sporting Life with Dick Schaap, in which he discussed the week's developments in sports. He wrote the 1968 best-seller Instant Replay, co-authored with Jerry Kramer of the Green Bay Packers, and I Can't Wait Until Tomorrow. Mort Gerberg is a multi-genre American cartoonist and author whose work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, books, film and television. He is best known for his magazine cartoons, which have appeared in diverse titles such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Harvard Business Review, and The Huffington Post and for his book, "Cartooning: The Art and The Business". He created a weekly news cartoon, Out of Line, for Publishers Weekly from 1988 to 1994 and has drawn an editorial-page cartoon for The Columbia Paper, the newspaper in Columbia County, New York, since 2003.
