Although in later life he embraced Buddhism, Yorke was one of the handful of people who laboured to preserve the legacy of 'The Beast' after his death in 1947, and through his work as a publisher's advisor he was also instrumental in the publication of many of the most important works of his times on the occult, yoga and Buddhism. Yorke's profound practical as well as theoretical knowledge of these subjects is reflected in these essays, some of which are published here for the first time. They are accompanied by a biographical Introduction by Keith Richmond, a Reminiscence by Timothy d'Arch Smith, and a revised version of Yorke's Crowley Bibliography by Clive Harper. British journalist Yorke travelled widely in China between 1930 and 1932, as a correspondent for Reuters reporting on the momentous events that were occurring at that time. Despite his relatively short stay in China, the extent of his travels and the intensity of his focus on understanding China, the Chinese, their politics and religions resulted in this valuable account of the times. Travelling by pony, rail, bus, sampan and on foot, Yorke's first-hand account acquaints the reader with the struggles between the Communist and Nationalist forces, as well as the conditions of day-to-day life that the Chinese endured. Following Yorke's return to Britain he played an important role in the popularization of Buddhism in the English speaking world. Spine a little darkened; binding firm.
