A very uncommon and highly sought after reference work for those interested in New Jersey history and those intensely interested in notaphily. The book opens with an essay on the history of money and banking in New Jersey and is followed by sections on wampum, colonial and early state coins and paper money, n enormous section on obsolete state bank notes and old scrip (local bank issues), national bank notes , and paper money of the Great Depression. All sections well illustrated with actual examples. The colonial section is detailed issue-by-issue with issue dates, amounts and denominations of each as well as additional information on print colors, watermarks, and printers when known. The encyclopedia obsolete bank notes section is organized by town, city, township, bank or company, each entry providing dates, color, design, possible duplications and counterfeits based on incomplete or absent historical information, printer imprints, denomination. the nationally chartered bank section is arranged alphabetically by place with the name of the bank, its charter number, and the year of issue. The section on scrip notes issued in New Jersey during the 1930s is arranged alphabetically by place with detail on color, denomination and imprint when known.
