"Since its beginnings in the early sixteenth century, the almanac has been a source of practical knowledge, opinion, and entertainment that has been enjoyed by millions of people, whatever their occupation or philosophy. The comic almanac was a natural outgrowth of its more serious antecedent, although by today's standards it is difficult often to distinguish the travesty from the straight-faced original". Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. AINSWORTH, William Harrison (1805-1882), editor and contributor; LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth (1807-1882), contributor. Bentley's Miscellany. Vol. VII, No. XLIII. London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street, June 1, 1840. First Edition. Original monthly part in the publisher's printed pictorial wrappers. Octavo (8vo). Contains the June installment of William Harrison Ainsworth's Guy Fawkes: A Historical Romance, part of its first appearance in periodical form, illustrated by George Cruikshank with the plate "Guy Fawkes preventing Sir W. Radcliffe from joining the Conspiracy." Also contains Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Evening Star," p. 560. Although so titled in Bentley's Miscellany, the poem is the work now known as The Light of Stars, first collected in Longfellow's Voices of the Night in 1839, beginning "The night is come, but not too soon." An interesting early British periodical printing of Longfellow under an alternate title. Additional contents include "A Day at Eton," the concluding index to Volume VII, and contributions by Sam Slick, Charles Mackay, Alfred Crowquill, J. A. Wade, Mrs. Gore, Lady Georgiana Fullerton, Albert Smith, and others. Guy Fawkes was serialized in Bentley's Miscellany beginning in January 1840, with Cruikshank's illustrations forming an integral part of its first appearance in periodical form. This June number contains the sixth monthly installment of the serial. Contents with an unopened leaf; generally clean with scattered foxing and toning. Plates heavily foxed. Binding remains sound, with visible stitching and some looseness at the edges. Original wrappers worn and soiled, with chipping, creasing, and edge loss. Complete with all text, pages, and plates. A Good copy. Additional original monthly parts of Bentley's Miscellany containing Ainsworth's Guy Fawkes are listed separately in my inventory; please inquire if interested in purchasing multiple issues together. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. CRUIKSHANK, George, and HINE, Henry George (illustrators). The Comic Almanack and Diary for 1851. Edited by Henry Mayhew. London: David Bogue, 1851. FIRST EDITION, deluxe issue with color illustrations. Octavo (8vo). 64 pp., with 24 pp. of publisher's advertisements. Publisher's original gilt-decorated cloth, cut flush with the text block. Illustrated throughout by George Cruikshank and Henry George Hine, including a folding etched frontispiece by Cruikshank with contemporary hand-coloring. The folding frontispiece, "Probable Effects of Over Female Emigration," measures approximately 16.5 × 41 cm. Cruikshank imagines British men importing brides from the Pacific after English women have emigrated to Australia. Accompanied by an article on the same subject, the scene combines satire on marriage and emigration with the racial caricature of the period, giving the annual particular interest for collections of Victorian illustration and women's history. Contents generally clean and unmarked. Cloth with light rubbing and dulled gilt. A Very Good minus copy of the colored issue of this Victorian annual, retaining its hand-colored folding frontispiece.
