First Edition
First edition. Rust cloth-covered boards, gilt spine lettering, blind-stamped front and rear boards, 7 3/8 x 5 3/8 inches, 464 pp., index, 485 figures. Excellent illustrations, mostly intricate engineering-type drawings. Good plus (wear at spine ends and tips, with focal erosion of cloth; one short tear at a page edge, not interfering with text, 1/2 inch; occassional minor mark/spot on a few pages; previous owners' names, front pastdown and front free endpaper; otherwise, pages clean and binding strong). Several pages on X-rays, including a radiograph of a hand. And, regarding the ether: "The ether pervades all space. It is elastic and rigid, and is capable of displacement and of exerting pressure. It may be considered as a universal jelly, so thin as to pass readily through every known substance, and to permit the densest substance to pass through it as a sieve passes through the air; a jelly so thin that it has no appreciable weight and has caused no measurable change in the velocity of any heavenly body." (The ether, or at least ether with classical properties, lost currency with the advent of Einstein.) (3214006).
