1p., 12mo. In good condition. At the time of writing Scharf was on the verge of appointment as first Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Regarding a note he has received from Scharf he writes that the following Monday he goes 'thro' London direct to Brighton. This movement I fear does not hold out much facility for our meeting - but if your business carries you to Brighton you will find me at the Bedford Hotel.'.

3pp., 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition. Year not given, but with '1859' in a contemporary hand at top-right of first page. The recipient is not named, but the letter is from the papers of Sir George Scharf. It begins: 'I remember your saying in the course of last winter you would be glad an [sic] opportunity of coming to see me, & what little I have to shew you. | I conclude the Portrait Gallery as well as Institutions admits of some holidays at this season'. Consequently he suggests a time when the recipient might 'spend a few days' at Bowood, if his 'engagements admit'.

On pages 54 and [56] are reproduced in line engraving the outer paintings of the diptych: crest of a crowned lion `passant gardant' with the arms of Edward the Confessor, and badge of a white stag lodged (King Richard's device). The inner paintings, of the Madonna with Infant Saviour and angels, and of the King and his patron saints, are not reproduced here. G canvas under creased mottled green boards. Title-piece rubbed.

She is out of town, and Scharf's letter has followed her to Cheshire and Lancashire, and she is sending a letter of introduction to Lord Essex, whom she hopes will 'afford you every facility in your interesting pursuits'. She is flattered 'at the manner in which you always speak of my Grove Catalogue - it was a great pleasure to me & I much regret that other duties & occupations have prevented me for a time from continuing my Biographies'. She concludes by wishing him 'every success in your Blenheim Catalogue'.

He has received Scharf's 'private list' (of paintings to borrow?) and will let him know 'which I can spare immediately'. In the meantime, as Scharf is in town, he suggests that he go and see 'what I have' in 1 Stable Yard, St James! - The pictures there belonging to me are a Canaletto - view of Venice - a Rubens - His own daughter - an Original of Mrs. Siddons, by Sir W. Beechey & a View of Jerusalem by D. Roberts'. Should any of the paintings 'please' Scharf, he should write to the Duchess of Beaufort, '& ask if she could spare them'.

She begins: 'I cannot receive yr. repeated welcome remembrance of old Remp[ston]e. days, without a line of thanks for the pleasurable thoughts they awaken - a boon, to a Recluse, who lives much on the past & on the far-off present, which a friendly telescope may bring before her'. She congratulates him in graceful terms on his 'success'. She describes her 'comfortable happy winter': 'Our adult school prospering & occasionally enlivened by fresh May-Lantern Exhibitions & Microscope ones, & myself & others amused with Marine animals in their Tanks disclosing their Curious habits & forms, revealing their beauties, suggesting the Types of imitative art'. She continues in the same vein before exclaiming: 'I love Art, but love nature more - its interests ever encreasing as the opportunities of enjoying the other lessens, so I may well be grateful to it, as well as for the pleasure the other has afforded me through a long life'. TWO: 'Thursday' [no date]. 4pp., 12mo. She 'can never lose sight' of Scharf, 'with the minds Eye, tho' the outward one may more meet yr. happy looks, in yr. now prosperous state, in wch. none can more rejoice to think of than yr. old Friend'. She is pleased that he and 'Warburton' have become friends, 'for I dearly love & honor him & his position is anything but what he deserves'.There have been 'great Changes' at Rempstone. 'I seem to have seen enough in this word & to call up the past, & to live in the present this the numerous books that tell of it'. Her 'excellent Brother' is in good health, and she has 'a Lady friend or 2 in succession all kindly working for me in village advancement'. THREE: 'Sunday | 10 Nov. [1860]'. 4pp., 12mo. Announcing the death of her 'dear sister Sitwell', and describing in detail the circumstances ('[.] The day before she drove to Loughbro' Station to meet Miss Bathurst, her very old friend [.]'.) She gives news of her son and his wife, just returned from America, and condoles with Scharf on the loss of his father (George Johann Scharf, died 11 November 1860).
