Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. First Edition (NAP). Bound in tan cloth backed with a smooth silver cloth; titles in black. Corresponding 1935 dates to the title and copyright pages; no additional printings. The dust wrapper is signed "Salter", indicating the recent German immigrant Georg Salt…er (1934 - Salter did not add the "e" to his first name until he took US citizenship in 1940). The author and her husband travel along the inland waterways of Europe. The book carries whimsical line drawing illustrations by the author. This copy shows very light of edgewear; the binding has a slight shelf slant. There is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper, otherwise the volume is unmarked. The wrapper has moderate edgewear with light soil and several short tears (1/2" or less), along with a pinpoint hole in the rear gutter. It is not price-clipped. The wrapper is a very early example of the art of Georg Salter after his immigration to the United States. His career as artist, calligrapher and teacher would soar in the 1940s. A clean, tight copy with the jacket now in mylar. The Author; Georg Salter (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, some discoloration in gutters both front and rear, faint bookseller's rubber-stamp (Bertrand Smith Acres of Books) on front pastedown; jacket a bit age-toned along spine, light soiling to rear panel, tiny chips at spine ends]. "A frank study of huma…n evil" (Mark Van Doren, quoted in the jacket blurb), this novel is set in a small English village that's dominated by its 74-year-old overlord and his depraved family. The Irish author spent 13 years in prison after having had his death sentence (for his involvement in a post office robbery during the Irish Civil War) commuted at the last minute, and wrote a number of books about prison life and the criminal underworld. This book, oddly, appears to have not been published in either England or Ireland, although the author lived for most of his post-prison life in London. Reportedly, Phelan's stylistic influence in crafting this tale of rural English horror was Henry James's "The Turn of the Screw.". Illustrated by (dj design) Georg Salter (illustrator).

Brown/black board Hardcover. Cover stained and rubbed. Cover corners bumped. Cover edges slightly bumped. Spine upper and bottom parts missing. The remaining part of spine hinges rubbed, edges tattered. Pencil inscription on front inner cover. Pages and inner cover yellowing and age-stained.
