The confidential first edition dated March 1919, prepared for the British Delegation to the Paris Peace Conference (a second declassified edition made available to the public without the map appeared in 1920, retitled "Tanganyika (German East Africa)" and renumbered No. 113). Original grey printed card wraps 14x22cm. vi, 117pp, complete with the colour folding map in a back pocket. Very good, lightly bumped and creased to the corners, tanned to the spine, blue crayon number to the front. Map spotted, neatly folded with short closed fold tears. Chapters describe physical and human geography, political history (starting with Portuguese influence through to Arab rule, British and German interests, and native opposition), social and political conditions, and economy, with Treaty extracts in the Appendices. No authors are indicated, but it was a collective effort, with the series edited by George Walter Prothero, Director of the Historical Section, which had been established purposely by the Foreign Office. Histories were voluntarily contributed by experts, geography by Naval Intelligence Division staff, and economics by the Foreign Office War Trade Intelligence Department. Sheet 20 of the Geographical Section, General Staff series G.S.G.S. 2957, covering southern Russia, Ukraine, the Black Sea, Crimea, the Sea of Azov, Caucasus and approaches towards the Caspian. Compiled and drawn at the War Office in 1939, heliographed at the Ordnance Survey in 1940, this Third Edition incorporates communications revised in 1941. Railways, roads, towns, rivers and administrative divisions are extensively marked, with particularly attractive coloured relief across the Caucasus and a prominent representation of the Crimea and Black Sea. Issued at a strategically important moment during the Second World War as the Soviet theatre assumed increasing importance following the German invasion of the USSR. Institutional collections confirm the G.S.G.S. 2957 series and earlier states of Sheet 20, while this specific wartime Third Edition is considerably less frequently encountered in commerce. Original British military topographical map of Kuala Selangor and the surrounding district of Selangor, published by the War Office as part of the G.S.G.S. 4203 Malaya one-inch series, scale 1:63,360. A detailed multi-colour map extending from the Straits of Malacca coast eastwards across the Kuala Selangor district, showing settlements, roads, tracks, rivers, drainage, cultivated land, vegetation and relief with contours at 50-foot intervals. The lower margin contains extensive conventional signs, abbreviations, grid information and an index to adjoining sheets. The series developed from Federated Malay States surveys and wartime revisions incorporating aerial photography and military intelligence; the British Library preserves an earlier 1945 Fourth Edition of this same Sheet 3B/10 within its India Office map collection. This 1949 issue dates from the opening phase of the Malayan Emergency and represents the detailed military topographical mapping required for British and Commonwealth operations in post-war Malaya. Original examples of the exact Kuala Selangor sheet are commercially scarce. Large colour-printed folding military topographical map, scale 1:63,360 or one inch to one statute mile, approximately 71.5 × 53.3 cm. Prepared under the direction of the Assistant Director of Survey, Far East Land Forces, revised by 84 Field Survey Squadron, Royal Engineers, and drawn and printed by 570 Map Reproduction Troop RE in November 1957. Covering Manong and the surrounding Perak River district south-west of Kuala Kangsar, with detailed representation of roads, tracks, kampongs, rivers, jungle, cultivated land, rubber plantations, contours, spot heights and other topographical information. The printed compilation note records revision from RAF air-survey photography taken between November 1955 and May 1956, supplemented by ground survey revision in October 1957, making this a particularly contemporary cartographic record produced during the Malayan Emergency. An operational example of this precise Sheet 2M/8 is preserved in the Australian War Memorial, having been used by Support Company, 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment during Operation Rubber Legs in February-March 1957, demonstrating the direct military use of the Manong sheet during counter-insurgency operations. Series L707 is represented in major institutional map collections, but individual sheets are unevenly encountered and the 1957 Edition 2-GSGS of Manong appears scarce commercially. Very good overall, with original folding creases, light handling and storage wear and punch holes to the extended filing margin; colours and cartographic detail remain clear. Original British military topographical map of western Afghanistan, sheet size 48.2 × 63.1 cm, published within the Geographical Section, General Staff quarter-inch series at the scale of 1:253,440 or one inch to four miles. The underlying cartography is designated First Edition, 1941, but this particular physical impression was printed in 1949 in a stated run of only 1,000 copies. The sheet covers parts of the Farah and Herat Provinces close to the Iranian frontier, recording roads, tracks, caravan routes, settlements, camps, wells, springs, cultivated areas and extensive desert and mountain terrain, with relief printed in brown. It was compiled principally from North-West Frontier Sheet 12 S.E., First Edition, with additions to 1936 and other available sources. The 1949 printing belongs to a significant transitional period following the end of the Second World War and the independence of India and Pakistan, when Afghanistan remained strategically important between Iran, the Soviet sphere and the newly reorganised political geography of South Asia. Closely related Afghanistan mapping was subsequently reprinted by the U.S. Army Map Service; Western Michigan University preserves numerous AMS U511 sheets derived from earlier British G.S.G.S. and Survey of India cartography, including Farah-area mapping. The stated 1,000-copy print run gives this impression particular scarcity interest. A striking early Cold War British military map covering virtually the entire Soviet Union from Eastern Europe and the Baltic across Siberia and Central Asia to Kamchatka and the Pacific, together with the Caucasus, Caspian region, northern Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea and adjacent territories. Relief is shown through attractive graduated hypsometric colouring, with seas and inland waters in blue and extensive geographical, communications and administrative information throughout. The printed revision statement records that the map was compiled by the Ordnance Survey in 1948, revised and transferred to the U.S. G.S.G.S. system in 1951, received minor revision in 1952 and was reproduced by the Ordnance Survey in 1953; the sheet is specifically designated G.S.G.S. 4625, U.S.S.R., Second Edition. A substantial range of British, American, Soviet and continental mapping sources was employed in its compilation, illustrating the importance attached to Soviet geographical intelligence during the developing Cold War. Institutional records confirm the G.S.G.S. 4625 series, particularly the 1948 first edition and later revised issues, while this exact 1953 Second Edition appears considerably less frequently encountered. This first GSGS edition dated 1953, was based on a USAF Pilotage Chart (1948, revised June 1952), with air information supplied by the Ministry of Defence as at November 1952, and reproduced by the Ordnance Survey in an edition of 5,000 in July 1953 (5,000/7/53). Centred on Syria and northern Jordan, coverage is bounded by Beirut (NW), and the Syria-Iraq, Jordan-Iraq, and Jordan-Saudi borders (E, SE). The Haifa branch of the Iraq Petroleum Company Pipeline including its Pumping Stations runs across the lower section almost parallel with the Syria-Jordan border. A significant section of the Trans-Arabian Pipeline (Tapline) which began operation in 1950 is also drawn. Altitude is colour shaded. A visually impressive wartime map covering a vast area from the Balkans, Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean across Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Transjordan, Iraq and Iran to the Persian Gulf, and southwards into Egypt and Libya. Major centres including Cairo, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Baghdad, Basra, Tehran and Istanbul are shown, together with roads, railways, relief, hydrography and strongly emphasised international and administrative boundaries. The 1941 date is of particular significance, placing the map within a year in which British and Allied forces were engaged across the Western Desert, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon and in the joint Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran, while the region's oilfields, ports and communications routes were of exceptional strategic importance. Institutional examples are recorded at Yale University Library and the National Library of Israel, while Cambridge University Library preserves an archival record for The Near and Middle East, 1940-1941. Coverage on the Basra side is bounded by Iraq's borders with Iran, Kuwait and the Saudi-Kuwaiti Neutral Zone (E, with Basra at the eastern edge), the Saudi-Iraqi Neutral Zone (S), Sinjar (W), and Diwaniya (N). The Baghdad side extends northward from Diwaniya (S), bounded by Haditha (W), Kirkuk (N), and Kermanshah (E). This sheet, dating to the early years of the Egyptian Republic, was based on a USAF World Aeronautical Chart dated March 1953. Coverage is bounded by the Gilf Kebir Plateau (N), Selima Oasis (uninhabited) (SE), the Libyan / Anglo-Egyptian Sudan border (SW), and Jebels Uweinat and Arkenu (W). Altitude is shown by colour tinting. Geographical features are accompanied by numerous captions describing the terrain such as variations in sand and gravel, barchan dune formations, etc. The "Memorial monument" south of Gilf Kebir would be the Prince Kemal el-Din Monument, which Laszlo Almasy had built in 1934 for his late patron and friend (1874-1932) close to where he had discovered the Cave of Swimmers.
