A series of letters written in 1896 between Claude Bowers and the 58 year old Dr. William Everett, son of the famous orator, Edward Everett. Bowers was a student in high school when Dr. Everett, also a noted orator, and scholar, schoolmaster, and congressman, visited Indianapolis in the summer of 1896 to participate in the "Goldbug" National Democratic Convention. Bowers, a precocious seventeen year old, invited Everett to contribute to a literary magazine to be published by his Indianapolis High School's class of 1898. The project collapsed for lack of financing, but the record of their correspondence is preserved in the Everett Papers in the Massachusetts Historical Society. In later life, Bowers became a newspaper editor, author and ambassador to Spain and Chile. He delivered the keynote address at the 1928 Democratic National Convention in Houston.…
