Octavo, xvii, 291pp, [3]. Black cloth, title printed on spine. The first printing, with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page, "I-37" code in gutter. Solid text block. Illustrated endpapers, with light offsetting from the publisher's glue along hinges. In the publisher's dust jacket, wear along top edge, $6.95 retail price on the front flap, bright illustrations, a near fine example. Inscribed on the half-title: "To Richard Dill / _ 11th Combat Engineer Battalion, Eighth Army, Korea, 1950-1951, a participant in this bit of history making, with all best wishes / M. B. Ridgway / General, US Army / Retired / 9 Aug 69." General Matthew B. Ridgway (1895-1993) served as the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. After his notable Allied victories in the Italian Campaign and the Battle of Normandy, Ridgway took command of the XVIII Airborne Corps. He commanded the corps in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation Varsity and the overall Western Allied invasion of Germany. After the war, he served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952-1953), the Army Chief of Staff (1953-1955), and as a member of the "Wise Men" group, advising President Johnson on the Vietnam War. Envelope. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Patriotic 1st class envelope. SIGNED by General of the Army Matthew B. Ridgeway. Printed statement on envelope reads -"St. Patrick Drove The Snakes Out of Ireland General Ike will Drive them out of Europe." Fine. General Ridgway took command of the 82nd. Airborne in 1942. He Jumped into Sicily and later Salerno. On June 6th he parachuted into Normandy on D-Day. He was Supreme Commander in Korea by 1951 after transforming the demoralized U. S. Eighth Army into an aggressive combat force.
