Edition originale. 15x24cm, reliure en demi vélin d'époque, plats marbrés, pièce de titre en maroquin noir, titres dorés, 594pp. Suite à une longue et prestigieuse carrière militaire qui se termine par son admission dans la réserve en 1867, Joachim Ambert (1804-1890), dit le général baron…Ambert, est rappelé en 1870 pour être chargé du commandement du 5ème secteur. Mais il est rapidement démis de ses fonctions à cause de ses sensibilités politiques. Sympathisant de Napoléon III, anti-communard, il attribue à la Commune une grande responsabilité dans la défaite finale de la France. Le récit qu il donne de ce conflit qui eu des conséquences politiques et intellectuelles majeures demeure cependant un témoignage de première main, et n est pas exempt, par endroits, d une certaine lucidité.
