Handcrafted bookbinding by Belgian, design bookbinder, Hedwige Gendebien. Book is bound in a dark olive green, crushed morocco leather with author's name & title gilt vertically on spine & date 1918 at foot of spine; both front & back covers feature an "art moderne" geometric style, Mondrian-like design over nearly the entire surface of the panels; the design is constructed of various colored rectangles & strips of a plastic coated, paper onlay in green, olive green, lavender, flesh-tone & black. Light pink/rose toned, coated paper onlay over the inner leather surfaces & matching endpapers; bookbinder's gilt stamp: H. Gendebien in lower front leather turn-in; top edge gilt, headbands. 1918 book pages show a few, scattered age-related tan spots, untrimmed edges show tanning. Plastic coated onlays show a few very light, small scratches. Overall, in fine condition. Material on Hedwige Gendebien can be found in: Georges Bernard/Wittockiana; "La Reliure D'Art dans le Benelux" & "Cinq annees de dons a la Wittockiana". Some of her work was exhibited at the Wittockiana in the 1980's. Examples of her bindings are rare in the USA. (French & Latin text).
