Er wurde 1353 von Ludwig von Anjou gegründet und 1578 von Heinrich III., König von Frankreich, reorganisiert. Neben dem König als Großmeister hatte der Orden acht Kommandeure, von denen drei bis vier Kardinäle und Erzbischhöfe als Vertreter der katholischen Kirche waren. Daneben gab es kommandierende Offiziere wie Kanzler und Siegelbewahrer, Zeremonienmeister, Schatzmeister und Sekretär, die durch weitere Offiziere unterstützt wurden. - Der Kupferstich zeigt die erste Aufnahme von Ordensrittern nach der Reorganisation, in der Mitte stehend Henri III.
