Bibliography; 50 color photos of Staffordshire figures by Gavin Ashworth and Gary Leggett; from "Acknowledgements" section: "…From the last decades of the 18thC. until well into the 19th, the Staffordshire district of west central England produced pottery figures often known as "chimney ornaments," because they were so frequently placed on mantles. Intended for a middle class market, they portray the fascinations and the amusements of late 18th and early 19th C. Britain. The Royal Family, military heroes, popular characters in theatre and literature, legendary highwaymen and evangelical preachers--all were transformed into the clay statuettes.". Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. A very large-format hardcover book, fully illustrated in colour. A beautifully detailed and lavishly illustrated work. ***Very good in light-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and fr…ont board. The boards are clean and unmarked. No serious bumps or creases, but please note there is a light bump to the lower corners of the boards, and this has lightly creased the bottom outer corner of the page block (please see detailed scans). No reading lean to the binding. Flat spine tight. Page block edges white and clean - just some rubbing marks to the bottom edge near the fore-edge. Internally also near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions. Interior pages clean. No serious creases or tears - just the previously mentioned bump to the lower corner of the page block. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which is unpriced. The dustwrapper has foldover top and bottom edges to protect from tears and chipping. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed and creased, with light marks commensurate with handling. No serious creases and no chips or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper clean and bright. ***310mm x 235mm. 450 pages of photographs and text, including a detailed section of Concordance, Abbreviations, Bibliography and Index at the back of the book. ***Contents: Director's Foreword, Preface by Morrison H. Heckscher, Acknowledgements, Notes on the Catalogue, Introduction, CATALOGUE I. Seating Furniture, II. Tables, III. Case Furniture, Appendix 1: Addenda, Appendix 2: Photographic Details, Appendix 3: Explanatory Drawings, Concordance, Abbreviations, Bibliography, Index, Photograph and Drawings Credits. ***'The Metropolitan Museum's superb collection of early colonial furniture is expertly documented in this long-awaited publication. It presents a broad spectrum of furniture forms made in America during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries - from chairs and other seating to tables, boxes, various types of chests and cupboards, dressing tables, and desks - and includes prime examples of the different modes of ornamentation in fashion during that period. Freshly photographed in color for this volume, each of the 141 objects is thoroughly described, with detailed information given on its construction, condition, dimensions, materials, and inscriptions and other marks, as well as provenance and exhibition history.' (Quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper) ***An extremely well-produced illustrated volume, recording the rare Early Colonial Period furniture held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A beautiful copy of a scarce book, albeit with the bumped page block, and rare to find in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. ***As this is a large format portfolio book - please contact us for postal rates before purchasing if you live outside the UK! Many thanks. Gavin Ashworth (illustrator).
