T.L.S. 4to. personal letterhead, Louisville, Kentucky, November 29, 1924; scarce and important clarification of this war record providing the recipient with biographical information pertaining to his Civil War Service, in part: ".I never saw President Lincoln, was with the Western Army, all the time in the service. I entered the army October 1861 as a private in Company A. Kentucky Vol. Infantry. made First Lt. Co. H. June 1862. made Captain Co. H. and twice wounded at Vicksburg, Mississippi, December 29, 1862 - in leading the assault. In March 1863 was sent home to be buried, account of bad health. September 1, 1863 re-entered army as Colonel 64th Kentucky and was immediately assigned to the command of eight regiments of infantry, a battalion of 700 cavalry and one battery of artillery, and held this to the close of the war. I was just 22 when given this command." "In the assault of Vicksburg I was given 4 companies with 266 men, and I lost 163, killed, wounded and captured in the campaign." Fine condition. *This item will be of great interest to collectors of Kentucky Regimental Histories. Civil War veteran who served in the Twenty-second Kentucky infantry U.S. Volunteers; participating in many engagements, including the Cumberland Gap and Vicksburg. He was later appointed Surveyor of Customs by President Grover Cleveland.
