Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. A thoughtful postwar novel blending suspense, moral conflict, and religious conviction, The Victory of Paul Kent follows a young Methodist minister whose promising career is shattered when he becomes entangled in a murder investigation involving one of his parishioners. As Paul Kent struggles between the demands of justice, pastoral confidentiality, and personal conscience, Garth Hale explores questions of faith, redemption, forgiveness, and ethical responsibility. Written with psychological depth and informed by the author's own academic and theological background, the novel offers both an engaging mystery and a serious examination of Christian morality in mid-century America. This copy is the original 1948 Book Club Edition, housed in its original illustrated dust jacket featuring striking period artwork. The cream cloth hardcover remains in Very Good condition, with bright, clean boards, crisp spine lettering, strong hinges, and an exceptionally bright red topstain. The text block is clean throughout with no ownership markings or writing observed, and the binding remains tight and square. The original dust jacket is present and complete but grades Fair, with numerous chips, edge losses, closed tears, spine wear, and rubbing, particularly along the upper edge and rear panel. Despite the substantial wear, the dramatic front cover illustration and spine remain highly presentable, making this an attractive display copy of an increasingly uncommon postwar religious novel. Garth Hale was an American novelist, educator, and theologian whose fiction frequently explored moral responsibility, faith, and the complexities of Christian ministry. Before entering academia, he worked on the railroad, later earning degrees in divinity and philosophy. He taught at several colleges, including Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), where he specialized in literature and literary criticism. The Victory of Paul Kent was his third novel, following Strait Is the Gate and This Pounding Wheel, and reflects his lifelong interest in the ethical and spiritual challenges faced by ordinary people.
