Dark blue cloth rubbed with some scattered small white stains to boards; spine's gilt stamping dulled but legible. Reddish-brown top edge; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Toning and a few foxing spots to endpapers; some soiling to several initial leaves; a few scattered spots of foxing to interior text pages which, overall, remain clean. Two-line ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper: "Henry Bellamann | New York City - 1943." Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. Classic novel depicting the struggles of Don Cossacks in the transition of czarist rule to Soviet communism during the World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the Russian Civil War. Sholokhov won the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature. The book's original owner was novelist, poet, and music professor Henry Bellamann (aka Heinrich Bellamann) who is best known for his 1940 novel KINGS ROW. Bellamann enjoyed teaching and/or administrative positions at South Carolina's Chicora College from 1907 to 1924 thereafter employed at Julliard, Curtis Institute of Music, and Vassar College. His papers and those of his wife Katherine Jones Bellamann, a noted poet and author in her own right, are held by the University of Mississippi J.D. Williams Library Special Collections. This book was obtained from a collection of Bellamann material inherited by a family descendant.…
