From the cover: An integrated collection of essays examining the politics, social networks, law, historiography, and literature of the later Roman world. The volume treats three central themes: the first section looks at political and social developments across the period and argues that, in spite of the stress placed upon traditional social structures, many elements of Roman life remained only slightly changed. The second section focuses upon biographical texts and shows how late-antique authors adapted traditional modes of discourse to new conditions. The final section explores the first years of the reign of Theodosius I and shows how he built upon historical foundations while unfurling new methods for utilising, presenting, and commemorating imperial power. These papers analyse specific events and local developments to highlight examples of both change and continuity in the Roman world from 284-450. Contents Introduction by Scott McGill, Cristiana Sogno, and Edward Watts PART I POLITICS, LAW, AND SOCIETY 1 The unity of the Roman Empire by David Potter 2 Roman patronage by Peter Garnsey 3 Roman matchmaking by Cristiana Sogno 4 Constantine the lawgiver by Jill Harries 5 Constantine answers the veterans by Serena Connolly PART II BIOGRAPHY AND PANEGYRICS 6 Three generations of Christian philosophical biography by Edward Watts 7 The education of Paulinus of Pella: learning in the late empire by Josiah Osgood 8 Another man's miracles: recasting Aelius Donatus in Phocas's Life of Virgil by Scott McGill 9 Gregory of Nazianzus's Life of Julian revisited (Or. 4 and 5): the art of governance by invective by Susanna Elm PART III FACES OF THEODOSIUS I 10 Liar in winter: Themistius and Theodosius by Peter Heather 11 Moments of truth: Gregory of Nazianzus and Theodosius I by Neil McLynn 12 Reinventing Constantinople: Theodosius I's imprint on the imperial city by Brian Croke 13 Reinventing history: Jerome's Chronicle and the writing of the post-Roman West by Mark Vessey.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Unravelled . is the story of Elizabeth Fulloon, the first female Superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory. Appointed from England and with no apparent backgroundin managing prisoners or experience in manufacturing wool and spinning, she had to quickly adapt to a colonial posting with only begrudging support from the male staff and ex-convicts engaged to help her run one of New South Wales' most important 19th century institutions.Elizabeth's task was a difficult one. She was expected to house and keep gainfully employed a growing number of convicts, new arrivals awaiting assignment, and women who, through illness, age or infirmity, would never leave the Factory. The introduction of a Board of Management and increasing bureaucracy made her position more challenging. Her final weeks at Parramatta ended with the infamous Female Factory riot in October 1827, when the women broke out of the Factory in protest at their rations being cut.Elizabeth's first husband, John Fulloon, died during the voyage to New South Wales in 1824 on board the 'Brothers'; her second, Robert Raine, was found drowned in the Parramatta River, allegedly murdered, and her third, William John Speed, was an ex-convict transported for bigamy. Both her colonial marriages lasted only a few months and ended in acrimony.Direct descendant Heather Garnsey has found that few stories about Elizabeth's life - as well as those of her three husbands - stand up to scrutiny. With detailed references drawing on archival sources and a full bibliography, Unravelled will give new insights into both Elizabeth's fascinating life and the Parramatta Female Factory in the 1820s. A biographical study of the first woman to be Superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory, Unravelled gives a fascinating insight into the life of Elizabeth Fulloon, a woman largely forgotten in early NSW colonial history.
