The periods covered are 1873 -1918 (Gardner); 1918-1948 (Beardsley) and 1949-1973 (Carter), part four is a Past and Present endpiece by the editor, N C Phillips. The result is a detailed, informative and polished history of the university. 530 pages including 13 appendices, source notes, bibliography, index. 32 pages of b/w illustrations include many portraits, university buildings, notable events and general views, decorated front e/papers, map back e/papers. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles/university arms, VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ VG+ with few small chips.
