The book describes itself as a "fairy tale for ADULTS ONLY" though I found the book both innocuous. I gather it is sort of a parody of some sort; perhaps a more informed reader will enlighten me. The inked inscription to "Grace" is dated oddly, "26, IV 74", clearly signifying April 26, 1974. It reads: "To Grace, With appreciation and admiration from Sally and me. Love Gant". The strong circumstantial evidence that the Grace of the inscription was in fact Princess Grace is that she happened to be visiting New York at the time to participate in a Lincoln Center Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock that occurred on the 29th, an event that received a huge amount of publicity and coverage at the time. Gaither had developed a close relationship with the Kelly family when he produced a revival of George Kelly's classic drama, "Craig's Wife", in 1947. George Kelly was Grace's uncle. From then on Gaither became a close friend of Grace, accompanying her to Monaco when she was to be married, and writing one of the early biographies of the movie star. The only mysteries to us are twofold -- how is it that Gaither had waited so long to give her a copy, and how did the book wend its way to us eventually. As to the first question, while Princess Grace, who had once lived in the city, made many return trips to the city after her marriage, there seems to have been a hiatus in this between 1963 and the early 1970s. As to the second, our guess is that she simply mislaid the book in her hotel room, or perhaps it was given to or taken by a member of the hotel staff as a souvenir. The Sally in the inscription is an obvious reference to the protagonist of the book. We are not certain as to when Grace arrived in the city for that visit, but the inscription obviously could have been done in a day or two before in anticipation of that visit. As to the book itself, it is quarto, 26.5 by 18 cm. 60 pp. The text and illustrations bring to mind the Eloise series in both its prose and illustrations as well as the novels of Patrick Dennis, and especially, "Little Me". Given the similarity to these other works, it seems particularly germane Gaither's substantial experience in the professional theatre in multiple capacities.
