Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the emergence of congenital neck fistulas, a condition noted in medical literature as early as 1832. The author presents 11 observed cases of the condition, including two they personally encountered. Their descriptions of the condition vary in form and severity, repr…esenting the range of development of the fistula. The author establishes that the condition is congenital, often has a hereditary component, and most often appears at the junction of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the clavicle. The fistula typically appears as a small, often barely visible opening with a fibrous cord running from the opening in a superior and internal direction toward the esophagus or pharynx. Despite the varied forms the condition can take, it is consistently associated with symptoms such as a burning sensation, the formation of a small lump or cyst, and the occasional expulsion of a clear, viscous fluid from the opening. Although surgical intervention has been attempted to correct the condition, the provided case studies indicate these efforts typically exacerbate the symptoms or lead to complications such as infection and inflammation. As such, the author recommends against surgical intervention except as a last resort. The insights provided in this book expand our knowledge of congenital neck fistulas and provide guidance for their treatment, making it a valuable resource for medical professionals and researchers.
