6 vols in 1, cloth, folio, 35 cm, ca 650 pp (reproducing the original 4 pp to 1 page). From the blurb - "George Edward Cokayne's Complete Baronetage was published in six volumes commencing in 1900. Unlike his Complete Peerage which went through a heavily revised second edition, the Complete Baronetage has remained out of print f…or many years and is now very scarce. This Microprint edition will be of value to history libraries and collectors alike. This reprint edition has a new introduction byHugh Montgomery-Massingberd." From the publisher's note: "All six volumes are here reprinted photographically in reduced format enabling the complete work to be published as one, conveniently-sized volume. In general the pages are reduced to approximately eighty percent of their original size and arranged in fours, even numbered pages on the left and odd numbered pages on the right. The omission of some blank pages accounts for any apparent breaks in numerical sequence and the occasional departure from this policy." From Montgomery-Massingberd's introduction: "The Complete Baronetage remains, as reprinted here, all [Cokayne's] own work. In five volumes and an index, it covers the baronetcies created from 1611 to 1800.In fact, the baronets are definitely not peers, rather the holders of an hereditary order of knighthood. .The vast majority of the existing baronetcies can pass only to direct male heirs. The original purpose of the Order of the Baronetage was to help in the colonization of Ireland. The baronets were made to pay the equivalent of thirty soldiers' wages for three years in return for the new dignity. .Since the baronetage was instituted as a means of raising money, it was originally limited to substantial county landowners with estates that brought in at least £1,000 a year.". Near Fine in spotted and chipped dustwrapper.
