He began his…career in 1952 as a typographer, portrait painter and advertising consultant. In 1960 he turned to sculpture, in which he achieved initial success (Biennale Musà e d'Art Moderne , Paris ; Documenta II (1959) and Documenta III (1964), Kassel ; German Pavilion, Venice Biennale1966). Ris maintained his studio in Oberpleis. His clear, concrete sculptures in public space are sensual, rigorous and direct, expressing a basic attitude of transparency and tolerance. The connection of drawing, painting and architecture in sculpture was one of his main artistic concerns, which he approached from a wide variety of perspectives. In his later work from 1996 onwards, he followed the âPaysages Architectualsâ of the 1960s and continued to develop these architectural landscapes made of white plastic in numerous variations on a theme. He also worked as a designer and developed furniture, interior fittings and, for example, a coffee and tea service for Rosenthal, glasses and the âSunballâ ball chair (1969), which has been produced again as a replica since 2015.
