Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, vi + 185 pages, NOT ex-library. Clean, untanned pages with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Endpapers and outer page edges, as well as inner panels of the dust jacket, affected by age-spotting. -- In "The Ordeal of Alfre…d M. Hale: The Memoirs of a Soldier Servant," Paul Fussell uncovers an exceptional and previously overlooked military memoir. Originally titled "A Note on the War 1914-1918," this book reflects the unique wartime experience of Alfred Hale, a minor musician of gentle birth who found himself unsuited for military service. Despite this, he was caught in Lord Derby's recruiting scheme and ended up serving as a batman in the Royal Flying Corps. His memoir, written two years after his demobilization, offers a deeply personal account of his humiliation and struggle to rise above his unsuitability for military life. Hale's observations of life in the lower ranks are both sharp and devastatingly honest, with moments of biting humour. He describes interactions with his superiors, such as the insincere smile passed down from the Colonel to the Sergeant-Major, capturing the rigid social hierarchy of the British military. His writing is filled with self-pity, yet there is a striking lack of demand for sympathy. The memoir unintentionally exposes the breakdown of a social order previously taken for granted, providing an insightful and touching commentary on class and society during the First World War. Hale's ability to find redeeming qualities in the worst situations elevates this memoir beyond simple self-reflection, offering readers a unique window into the psychological and emotional toll of war.
