Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Father Flanagan of Boys Town by Fulton Oursler and Will Oursler Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York Copyright 1949 - Stated First Edition This classic 1949 biography chronicles the inspiring life and work of Father Edward J. Flanagan, the Irish-born Catholic priest who founded Boys Town in Nebraska. Written by renowned author Fulton Oursler and his son Will, the book draws from direct interviews, letters, speeches, and personal accounts to tell the full story of Father Flanagan's visionary mission: proving that "there is no such thing as a bad boy" by providing love, education, and opportunity to homeless, orphaned, and troubled youth regardless of race or religion. Starting with just $90 and five boys in a rented house in Omaha in 1917, Father Flanagan built Boys Town into a self-governing community that transformed thousands of lives. The narrative includes moving case histories of the boys, the challenges overcome (including fires, financial hardships, and skepticism), and Father Flanagan's postwar efforts to aid war orphans in Europe and Asia. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and featuring map-illustrated endpapers of Boys Town. Condition Details: • Hardcover in light green (or off-gray/tan variant) cloth boards with gilt and green titling on spine. • Binding tight and square; pages clean with no foxing, though some light age-appropriate toning. • Minimal wear: small rubbing and light wear to cover edges; light shelf wear to bottom edge of boards. • Dust jacket in fine condition - bright and complete, with original $3.00 price intact on front flap. Protected in a removable mylar sleeve. • Overall, a very well-preserved example of this collectible first edition, just one year after Father Flanagan's passing in 1948. A heartfelt and historically significant book that captures the essence of compassion and rehabilitation - ideal for collectors of mid-century biographies, Catholic history, or Americana.
